Change management

When a business is undergoing a change process, it has at least two challenges - how to manage the change to realise the projected benefits and how to manage the change alongside the ‘business as usual’ activity. In these circumstances it ‘s important to ensure that the correct level of support is available and co-coordinated to produce the required results.

The change may involve a single project, a focused package of projects to provide a major change outcome or a portfolio of projects spread throughout the organisation. For all these types of change, the priority at the initial planning stage must be that the change is aligned with the vision, strategy and business objectives and that the realisation of the benefits are translated into an improvement of the business as a whole.  This may need an analysis of the business processes and an evaluation of the key levers to ensure that change is directed towards the ‘weaker’ links in the business chain.

As well as being aligned, the change should follow a  standard process from inception to closure. The use of a standard set of tools, templates and techniques has been demonstrated to improve the success rate for change implementation.  This is an area that can make or break the change. What is used should be ‘fit for purpose’ and appropriate for the size and complexity of the change. Baseline plans should be developed to record the scope of the change and project plans produced to allow comparison of achievement against target.

The whole change process should be co-coordinated by a project/programme office - again, with resources appropriate to the scale of the change. Those team members engaged in the change must be aware of their role and have the necessary support and guidance.

                  It is important that:

  • The change is aimed at the correct destination
  • The most appropriate vehicle is chosen  for the journey
  • All the team are on board
  • You have a detailed map of how to reach your destination
  • Your driver and team know how to map read
